La Mama: Down With Reading!

Apparently, among the many other miracles attributed to breastfeeding, we can now enumerate “freedom from nerdy glasses in the 6th grade.”

Speaking as someone who had some very uncool, aviator gold trimmed glasses at age 11, this is no small thing. (Adam Silver wouldn’t kiss me when I was sporting the Top Gun styled bifocals… But suddenly, I get contacts, and wham! Instant pre-pubescent popularity).

Breastfeeding has just been shown to reduce the likelihood of myopia by 50%. However, there is a teensy little caveat. The breastfeeding doesn’t account for much if your child happens to read many books in his/her little life. Or, if they happen to have a genetic disposition to myopia.
Gee, well, hmmm….Thanks for that information, I guess. Or, not. My husband and I are both legally blind without our contacts, and I hope to God that my children all turn out to be avid readers. So, while I will be breastfeeding #3, you can bet I won’t be taking any books away from #1 or #2.

Here we come, LensCrafters….
