Go Brooke!

Never in a million years, since the days of Calvin Klein jeans did I think that I would be cheering on Brooke Shields. But after listening to a few clips of Tom Cruise’s ridiculous rant on psychiatry with Matt Lauer on the Today Show, I found it very intriguing when a friend of mine sent me this clip this morning on Brooke’s answer to Toms “slam” on drugs to treat depression on MSNBC. My favorite quote: “I’m going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruise has never suffered from postpartum depression,” Brooke wrote in an op-ed piece published Friday in The New York Times. Take that, Tom!

After the birth of my twins I was overwhelmed. Understandably, but there were so many things to contend with–low birth weight, breast feeding, the NICU–the stress was unbelievable. And while I didn’t suffer from post-partum depression, I had moments where I wanted to jump out the window too! Mine were moments, for Brooke and many others there are long hours and days on end feeling hopeless when everyone else around you doesn’t quite understand and you know you are supposed to be happy. I can’t imagine what this must be like with a newborn but I do believe whatever you can do to alleviate it is has got to feel like a life boat. And as one of my friends reminded me very early on when my children were infants, “if you’re happy, they’ll be happy–if you are filled with stress and anxiety, they feel it.” So if Scientology works for Cruise great, if Paxil works for Brooke great. I personally am trying very hard to stop judging what everyone else around me needs to be happy and just trying to achieve that illusive state myself.
