I always knew that a babies sense of smell was one of the first to develop but I never realized how intuitive it is for babies to begin to use it. When I came across this article that had new data to back up their developmental wonder I was intrigued. Because they have very little sense of sight at birth, the sense of smell is really what “gets them around.” It’s almost like a survival skill–if they can smell their mother’s milk, they can navigate to the nipple.
When we first had the twins, the nurses in the NICU told us that the most important elements for our babies to grow stronger and come home with us were to give them lots of “kangaroo time” (skin to skin contact) and lots of breast milk. It has always amazed me when I think about how that extra sensory contact helped them survive. Now at almost 5 years old you’d never know they were 3 and 4 pounds!
