Since the age of two, my son has been obsessed with Orcas. Yes, Orcas of “killer whale” fame. We’re not really quite sure what sparked the original interest and of course like the many hundreds of other stages we’ve gone through with Logan we were convinced this infatuation was just that. But here we are, he’s about to turn 5 and the obsession has grown. His room is filled with Orcas of all shapes and sizes and types. We have stuffed Orcas, finger puppet Orcas, bath toy Orcas. But his favorite Orca of all, Logan’s “Free Willy” is his giant stuffed Orca, “Orcie.” He sleeps with him by his side in his loft and vehemently believes that Orcie protects him. Last year he was an Orca for Halloween and had an Orca birthday party. Safe to say it’s probably not a phase.

In the last several months we thought we had reached the Orca saturation point and decided to do something about it. Lucky for us, living in the Pacific Northwest also means the San Juan Islands. Orcas Island to be specific. The best whale watching probably in the world. So we’ve decided to take a “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” attitude and we leave tomorrow for our whale watching adventure. The amazing thing is that we did really plan this as a special trip for Logan but since then everyone has gotten into the act and is so thrilled about going. We rented “Free Willy” last week and I promise you they must have watched it three nights in a row—I confess, I cried when he jumped the wall.

So tomorrow we say goodbye to the mainland and hello to sea life. Oh, and we’re also camping for the first time with the twins. Should be quite an adventure…Can someone out there make me feel better and tell me that you have a child obsessed with Orcas as well?
