San Francisco Mom: Soccer Mom, Here I Come

My son started preschool last week. Finally. The whole process of finding a preschool in San Francisco- and getting in - is such an Odyssey that I thought this day would never come. And here’s the part that’s even better - we LOVE everything about it.

Miles loves the toys and the teachers. I love the way the parents pitch in on everything from fundraising to making dinner for meetings, to washing the towells to taking out the trash. (Our school is a co-op). I love the way they don’t allow sugary snack foods. I love the way they have welcome parties, and quarterly Chevy’s night fundraisers, and art framing fundraisers and a Halloween party with tie dye. I’m not only drinking the kool aide, I can’t get enough of it.

In just two weeks, our lives have changed pretty dramatically. I now have a job (teaching at the school) on Mondays. So I spend all week trying to think of cool projects to do with the kids. And I’m already stressing about whether to bring cupcakes or brownies for Miles’ birthday next week.

This is not the person I ever thought I would be. In fact, it is a loooooooooong way from it. I always secretly despised soccer Moms. But now I’m just a step away. And here’s the funny part. Not only do I not mind it. I’m loving it.

  1. Definitely cupcakes. And go to the drugstore and get funny plastic dinosaurs to put on top–sorry, it’s the Martha in me. Everyone should love being involved the way you are. It’s not the stereotypical “soccer” mom but rather I like to call her the “Kool Aid” mom. The mom who’s house all the kids in the neighborhood come to because she has the coolest stuff. Worry less, play more.
