Tonsils!

Our 5 year old son is due to get his tonsils out on Tuesday. I’ve been telling myself it was going to be trivial until I started reading some stuff online about tonsilectamy and adenoidectomy and talking to friends. It’s clearly not going to be trivial.

Logan has never been a sickly child but he has always snored and we know he’s having a bit of apnea. He shared with me the other day that sometimes when he wakes up for school he’s tired. Poor thing. He’s such an active child that to think he’s that way despite having bad sleep is such a drag. We’ve convinced ourselves its necessary.

As our doctor explained the surgery to him it didn’t sound so bad. But when my friend Karen whose son had his out last year described the procedure it made even my throat hurt. She said they basically take a melon baler and scoop them out. Clearly I’m not sharing that with him. There is no stitching so it’s basically just an open wound.

This is also his first surgery so that feels uncomfortable. Just the idea of putting him under anesthetic is scary. I guess this is just another “parent” right of passage. I’ll let you know how it goes. If anyone has any advance advice, let me know…
