Spider Catcher

Quick post for all parents of ultra-sensitive, compassionate kids.

I read about this new gadget one day too late. While we were enjoying a post-holiday bloating, kicking back in the living room, I spotted a huge, eight legged creature making his way across the ceiling. As I screeched for my husband to come “take care of it,” of course it drew my kid’s attention as well. My husband came with the broom and our friend fell to a hardwood floored death. Our daughter broke out in tears. We ran to her, “what’s wrong?” “are you ok?” she cried and cried. She finally stopped long enough between breathes to remind us that the spider was a “living thing” and that daddy just “made it die!”

We felt terrible. Of course we did what any good parents would do, we lied. Daddy took our friend the spider outside—stunned but still alive—as far as she knew and set him free. Hence, “The Spider Catcher.” A fabulous way to get rid of spider in a humane way that our children would I’m sure not only approve of but would be amused by. I can’t wait to order it!

  1. Hey, we use a very low tech way to get rid of spiders. It also works for yellow jackets or other unwanted insects or arachnids. Take a clear plastic container–not too big, say an empty hummus container–and a stiff piece of paper but not too thick. Place the container over the unwanted intruder and slip the paper between the surface the pest is on and the bottom of the container. Push the paper all the way across the opening of the container and the bug will move up into the container. Then put your hand over the bottom of the paper and holding all together, open window or door and release into the fresh air or damp earth.

The ones on the ceiling are harder to catch but we just bat them down with the broom and then trap them.

    good luck,
