Twins anyone?

Having twins really does put you in unique company. Not quite as special as perhaps it once was–mainly due to more miraculous treatments for infertility like IVF (which is how our twins were conceived) as well as many women having children at a later age–where there is far more likelihood of having multiple births.

Being part of the special “twin mom club” has given me such an awesome group of mom friends who can really relate to the uncommon situations that arise almost daily. One of the most common one’s is whether or not to split the kids into different classrooms when they start attending school. Our kids are five and a half and have been in school since they were three. This is the first year we decided to put them in different classes. We felt that even though they weren’t particularly dependent on each other and both established their own friendships, it would give our son (less social than our daughter) a chance to really discover his own voice. Turns out it was a great decision. Both of our children are thriving and maintaining the closeness of the very special relationship they share. Our daughter Blaise informed me just yesterday that when she sees Logan on the play ground during recess he always finds her and gives her a hug and kiss. Sweet? I think so. Moreover what it does is keep teachers and friends from comparing the two of them which tends to happen being in the same class. While they are different genders, they’re the same age so it is hard not to compare them developmentally, socially, cognitively.

My fabulous twin mom friend Stacey sent me this article today that was in the New York Times a few days ago, “Born Together, Raised Together, So Why Not in Classroom, Too? I thought it was pretty interesting—especially since I didn’t realize there was such a hubbub and debate about the subject. Those of you multiple moms out there, we’d love to hear from you. What do you do?
