Jury still out on ill-effects of TV for kids

An interesting way to view the controversy over the ill effects of a young child’s daily diet of TV. Preschoolers who watch TV fare slightly better at school, but many experts still advocate a prudent approach. Researchers at Texas Tech University have new information posted in last month’s issue of “Pediatrics” that refutes the earlier presumption that TV viewing causes ADHD.

“Academics from Texas Tech University posit that inattentive children are more likely to watch TV in the first place, perhaps because their parents are more exhausted and so more inclined to resort to the box as an electronic babysitter. So a high diet of TV may be a consequence of the ADHD, not the other way round.”

Having twins and experiencing the exhaustion of the “before 2″ years with them, I can see this being incredibly plausible. In no way am I advocating to use the TV as a way out, but rather asking the rest of the world to give us overworked exhausted parents just a bit of a break and go with us when we say 30 minutes of Sesame Street or even Braincandy can be a good thing for everyone involved.
