Nature Deficit, Really?

Much to my surprise and complete delight, it appears I have a daughter that likes anything that creeps and crawls and has many, many legs. If ever there was a doubt of her suffering any form of nature deficit from growing up in our wonderful urban environment it’s gone.

This past Memorial Day weekend we went on our first family camping trip. We slept in a tent, under the stars, played in a stream, ran through the sprinklers, pee’d in an outhouse, made ice cream in a ball, roasted marshmallows and shared some s’mores,  We took a long hike to the top of a ridge and looked across an entire valley.

Oh, and when we were getting ready to leave Blaise brought me her container full of caterpillars. There must have been 50 creepy, crawling critters in there plus at least one big, black beetle that proceeded up and down her arms. She begged to bring them home with her and I had to protest. While my daughter is clearly very in touch with the world around her, I on the other hand am not.
