Anybody remember it? That hippie crazed, free lovin’, over the top Broadway musical? Who wouldn’t remember that awesome poster with the silk screen afro guy’s mirror image. Well, like my mother would have before me and now my daughter is after me, she will be performing the music from Hair at the end of this first week of “Broadway Bound” summer camp. Now, Blaise is a child who loves all things about performing–singing, dancing, acting –except for in front of people other than her brother, her father and me. We keep hoping she’ll get over this thing where she says, “I’m shy” because clearly she’s not but some sort of self-consciousness is already encroaching on her. But for the past 15 minutes we’ve been watching her practice the line that belongs to a “big girl” in the show:
“Stop! Why are you so hairy?” followed by the first lines of the song, “Tell me why…am I such a hairy guy?!” I’m convinced that Blaise would perform it with so much more conviction and dedication than the “big girl” but I supposed there’s time for that. Blaise is a girl who likes what she likes and this is something she definitely likes. She could not, would not stop talking about all the things that happened at Broadway Bound today including the “Big Girl” who passed out by the piano. This was not rumor but confirmed by her friend Maeve.
This was one of those days that I revel in the fact that as a mom I do some things right. Sometimes I find the right thing at the right time to make my kids so happy. I’m sure as they grow it’ll be harder and harder to capture that feeling of success but for now it’s all about “Hair.”
