There is a powerful trend of smart women beginning to emerge that society has deemed, “Mompreneurs.” I’m proud to say I am among them. There are so many of us out there that have dreamed up good ideas as we’ve been nursing, feeding or trying to affect a nap that there is now a term for us. What this does is really validate that we are not just “bored” moms with good ideas who thought it might be “fun” to start a business. We are a group of serious entrepreneurs who have taken our ideas from the dream state to the business world.
But it’s not easy for mom’s or anyone else trying to make their ideas a reality. Braincandy is a ton of work, due diligence and it’s not without sacrifice. Last weekend I spent two solid days preparing for a presentation to give to a group of investors to properly position our fantastic, growing business. During that time my two children were learning to ride their 2-wheelers, attending a birthday party and playing at the park—without me. Now before you give me your sympathy you should know that I do subscribe to the theory of “quality” over “quantity” and part of having my own business means that at least twice a week I pick up my children from school and either take them to one of their activities—ballet, soccer or Spanish, or we just hang out with the hamster. That is time that I value above all else. And whether we’re successful or not this experience of building something powerful has been incredible. Creating products that help kids like mine really build a foundation for learning is a rush and I’ll keep doing it for as long as I can. While I started the business with my husband, and he’s an incredible partner and a creative genius, I still consider myself among the other motivated mompreneurs making inroads into the world of independent business.
