Washington State’s Focus on Early Education

Washington State is 42nd in the nation for the largest class sizes. It also spends less money than almost any other state on public education–ranked 46th. So it’s heartening to hear more continued good news both on the focus side and the spend side. This recent article in the Seattle PI illustrates a renewed hope and focus on early education. Particularly interesting is of course is the attention given to the “early” part of education and the more holistic approach to helping our youngest learners succeed.

“We agree with the governor that the preparation gap is where the achievement gap starts, that kids who come to school (kindergarten) with inadequate vocabulary, social and emotional skills are at a huge disadvantage,” Severn said. “Early learning is the sensible way to address that gap.”
