Tonight is the third night of Hanukah and for the first time we took the children to a Hanukah party. Why we’ve never been to one before I’m not sure. Could be that we don’t have many Jewish friends, could be that our Jewishness doesn’t attract enough attention to get us an initiation, could be that many people know we’re an “interfaith” couple and don’t know exactly what we celebrate. In any case, our friends invited us to a Hanukah party tonight with latkes, sour cream, apple sauce and menorah’s. We left the Hanukah party and went to a Christmas party where lots of people collected around a piano singing Christmas carols (ok, there was the one Hanukah song–and it wasn’t even the dredal song.) I have to admit, as my children get older I feel a pull toward my cultural roots and a want for my children to have a connection with their heritage and traditions. I read this article and it struck a cord with me. Lessons Of Hanukah
I love lighting the candles, I love my Christmas tree. I hope my children will be able to navigate and i hope we don’t feel the need to choose. But as they grow and become more curious it seems sometimes our inclusiveness tends to feel like it’s disappearing. This will be our first year celebrating Christmas in our own house–kids waking up in their house running down the stairs looking to see what Santa has brought for them. We’ll all love it and leave the ambiguity for next year.
