For parents who want to worry less and play more!

Another Parent Worry

Many different people have posted about the subject of “nature deficit.” I was just reading the Seattle PI and again nature calls.  http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/298708_nature06.html It’s funny, living in Seattle and raising children here I have to say, I don’t worry about it as much. I’m not sure if that’s because we live here surrounded by so much green and so much nature that I feel like my children are in it all the time or because the story hasn’t impacted me in a way that the overwhelming problems like horrible public education, global warming and other big issues that potentially affect their future. It’s true that the words, “go out and play” hardly ever leave my lips and I hate that we live in a time where I fear for my children playing on their own in the front yard, but nonetheless I feel that’s the time we live in. What are the alternatives? Moving to a farm in the country? Does that solve the problem?

Regardless, for those of you who live in the Seattle area, I thought I’d pass on this information:

Attend the free discussion “Raising Children With Connections to Nature: The Battle Against Nature Deficit Disorder,” from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, 1/8, at the Seattle REI store, 222 Yale Ave. N.
