Most of you who read this blog know that I’m a mom of twins, someone who is usually pretty focused on issues related to parenting and education and also a “mompreneur” as I’ve heard it coined lately. Braincandy, the business I started with my husband Johnny in late 2004 is on the verge of really exploding and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We released our first DVD, “Braincandy, My 5 Senses” in 2005 and now are about to release our next 5. Our full series is going to be available in stores across the U.S. in October of this year!
Johnny and I were both filmmakers in Los Angeles for about 10 years and moved to Seattle in 1995 to pursue a complete career switcheroo and went to work for Microsoft. While I was learning a ton about marketing and big corporations, we both longed to do something with our lives that we could really “own.” At the time, nothing was motivating us out of the complacency of a steady paycheck and solid jobs. And then came the twins, Blaise and Logan. Getting pregnant after 4 years of trying was enough a complete shock (we thought it would never happen) but we never expected that they would be the motivation for us to start Braincandy.
Working full time at Microsoft and trying to be a good mom was a huge challenge. Not only that, my overwhelming mommy guilt and the time I was spending away from them put all kinds of crazy thoughts into my head. What if my kids were falling behind? Were they going to get into that great pre-school in my neighborhood? What if they weren’t learning when they were away from me? The scary thing is that I started reeling with all these questions before they had even turned 2! We found ourselves as caught up as many other parents in the concept that we needed to push them to learn. It didn’t take long to discover that flashcards and drills were not organic learning tools. Exhaustive research and interviews with hundreds of parents told us that we all longed for that back-to-basics approach: children learning through exploration and play. We set up an office in the laundry room of our Seattle home; and combining our filmmaking experience with what we were going through as parents we began editing our first DVD between spin cycles and saw our vision turn into reality. Braincandy was born!
We created Braincandy to honor the many ways young children learn. Set against a “5 Senses” platform, Braincandy introduces a more organic approach where children learn “how” to think rather than “what” to think.” The result is an active learning environment that provides little learners with thoughtful ideas, enabling them to think constructively about the world. I hope you’ll check back often as we launch our new products and do a lot more probing with the playisthework.com blog. We have a lot of new mom and dad contributors and are looking forward to hearing their thoughts and in turn hearing yours.
In the meantime, I hope your having an amazing summer. Today my children and I celebrated Seafair and listened to the Blue Angels roar overhead while we painted a wall in my daughter’s room gold. She’s almost 7 and decided she wanted to see the light hit that golden wall in the morning and light up her room. I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow.
