Have you ever noticed that it’s extra challenging to travel with your family when everyone else around you is also traveling with their family? This time of year, it seems that airports, rest-stops and amusement parks are packed with families trying to fit in one last trip before school starts.
We combined a work trip with a family vacation and It’s been fabulous. Partly because we’ve set very low expectations and stayed in a place that was very family friendly; We’re in Big Sky, Montana and I can tell you that everything here is big. Big rooms, big food, big hot tub, big everything. Our kids turn 7 tomorrow and what I can tell you is that I have balloons and picnic ready to go and I am sure this is a birthday they won’t soon forget. And that’s mainly because we’ll all be together experiencing a new place and new things together.
After doing some research of my own, I’ve put together a short list of helpful blogs with tips for surviving the last summer family vacation:
• The Notes from a Traveling Family blog has some excellent advice for preparing kids for trips including how to make new surroundings familiar.
• Lela Davidson has created a great list of must-have accessories for car trips including - who would have thought - a cookie sheet and magnetic letters.
• We Just Got Back has some helpful tips from real parents about where and when to take your trip. Did you know that if you can wait September, you’ll find great deals for preschoolers at amusement parks like Disney World? If those tips aren’t helpful, there’s always the Three Martini Family Vacation.
Do you have an interesting family vacation tip to share? Let us know.
