The Genius of Baby Einstein

As the co-founder and creator of Braincandy I know it must seem odd to be blogging about Baby Einstein, however I came across this op-ed in the New York Times last week that seemed to diffuse some of the controversy in the over 200 articles I’ve read on this subject ever since the University of Washington study was released.

What is interesting about Lisa Guernsey’s take on all of this is not the facts that she pulls from the study that cast serious doubt on both the methodology and the conclusions of the study but rather her very realistic view of it all.

“In real life, not every minute of the day can be filled with reading, especially to babies who might rather put the books in their mouths.”

What is important to remember more often than not is that as parents we’re all trying to do the right thing for our children. We read to them, we take them to the park, we get down on the floor and build forts with them and occasionally, we turn on the tube. If that is imperfect parenting, I’m guilty. But somehow I don’t feel that bad…
