Wow! What an incredible feeling. After three long years of very hard work, Johnny and I walked into the Borders store on Columbus Circle in the middle of New York City and saw our full Braincandy series on the shelf! It’s funny, friends of ours who know how hard we’ve worked to make Braincandy a reality think we’re such huge risk takers. They really believe we just chucked it all and jumped head first into building this business—which is true. All but the part about being risky people. I’m about the most conservative person you’ll ever meet (should we meet) worried about paying the mortgage, having money for the annual fund at school and paying the rest of the bills, but something happened to us when the idea came to us to start Braincandy. I became a woman possessed. I had this huge risk aversion but couldn’t help myself. I kept seeing the opportunity around every corner to buck the system and create something new. To fill a void that we wanted for our own children.
