The latest casualty in the toy recall wars, the beloved “Curious George.” The surface paint on his face was found to contain high lead content. There are so many recalls of late that it’s particularly hard for parents to navigate. As we approach the holiday season it feels in some ways that we’re playing Russian roulette with our choices. Released over the weekend a new toy headed for huge holiday sales, Aqua Dots, was recalled when the US and Australia found that young children were getting sick when the chemical that coats the beads is ingested and breaks down to become an illegal substance called, GHB—otherwise known as the “date rape” drug.
Recalls are a critical part of the toy safety chain. They are the “safety net” used in a robust and proactive testing system to get faulty products out of stores and away from children. My children are 7 and we have less of an issue with the everything goes in their mouth scenario that we did when they were two but it’s still quite scary. There are many resources online that give both information on the most recent recalls as well as the government site that details the full list of recalled toys. There’s one gift that will never contain lead paint, whose container is made of 30% post consumer recycled materials and uses soy based inks to produce the vibrant color you see. Did you guess it? Yes, it’s my shameless attempt at company promotion: Braincandy.
Enjoy!
