For parents who want to worry less and play more!

What is Braincandy?

Braincandy is about children learning about themselves as they more fully experience the world around them.

We know that cognitive development begins not a moment later than the time of birth. The way to honor the capacity of very young learners is to provide opportunities for them to construct meaning themselves. It is the simplicity of meaningful experiences, of touching, tasting and smelling, that build the foundations of intellectual breadth and creative capacity.”
David Katz, Noted Head of School, Giddens School, Seattle.

So what does that mean? It means that young children have the capacity to learn many things but also in many different ways. It is well known that very young children learn best through “play” not through a “push down” effect of direct “teaching.” Drills and repetition may passively teach children a few facts about the ABC’s and 123’s but unfortunately they don’t take into account the benefits of “active” learning.

We know through extensive early child developmental research that very young children learn best through “old fashioned” play, and by mimicking what other children are doing. By showing positive examples of children exploring their world through their 5 senses, Braincandy provides a platform for very young children to become more self aware and discover how they are connected to the world. Braincandy creates a “lean forward” experience. While most educational videos provide a passive learning experience (flashcards on video) and can be great for pacifying young children to sleep, Braincandy recognizes the negatives of deliberate passive exposure. Braincandy’s secret formula on the other hand creates a new standard of content (See Mommy Daddy Preview) that “actively” engages young children in the learning process, never talking down to them, all within a fun and entertaining platform. Avoiding rote methods of teaching Braincandy strives to make the passive activity of watching a video into a “real” active opportunity to discover and learn. Braincandy provides great tools for parents and caregivers. We hope that by watching Braincandy DVDs with your child you’ll develop innovative ideas that
enable you to communicate with your child in a whole new way. Through our images of real children, silly “sense” part puppets, and innovative animation we create a template of activities you can practice with your child whether watching the video or simply playing at the park. In addition, the exciting, multi-genre music will get you and your child up and dancing as well as providing “rest stops” or “quiet times” along the way.
